9 Ways to Engage Your Kids with Eco-Friendly Activities at Home
Unexpectedly thrown into homeschooling? It's no small task to keep your kids on track with learning their usual requirements when it comes to reading, writing, and math. But the extracurricular part is where you can really have fun with it! And since you're here we have a feeling that you and your kids are nature-lovers through and through.
That's why we've gathered 9 fun ways to engage your kids around sustainability, start some great new conversations, and have FUN along the way.
- Watch A Movie
The Lorax, Wall-E, DisneyNature’s Penguins - Pop some popcorn and watch these childhood favorites. When it’s over, chat with your kids about how they feel about it.
- Start a compost

- Play a game
Minecraft: Education Edition has a great set of biodiversity based games, free to anyone with a minecraft subscription. Check out these from WWF here: Extinction! Biodiversity, Extinction! Safari.
- Calculate your carbon footprint
Learn a little more about what a carbon footprint is in our lesson for kids. Follow along with this guide, and this powerpoint. Then, use this quiz we put together to see your family's carbon footprint, and make a pledge to lower it.
- Spring cleaning
Sort through old clothes and toys to make a give away bag to donate later. Find something broken along the way? Try to repair it before replacing it! If your kids are reluctant to part with their things, tell them it’s essential if they want to make room for something new in the future.

- Make art
Upcycle old materials to create a fun art project. Did you know, you can cut off the ends of dried markers, and soak them in water to make watercolor paint? Try painting on old newspapers, or the inside of cereal boxes for a cool textured background!

Check out this livestream from Ripley’s Aquarium Canada, where you can watch sharks and other fish in real time! It’s almost like being there yourself. Make a list of all the different types of fish you see and look them up later to learn more!
- Make some plant based treats
